Viori Shampoo Bars 3D Model and Render

This project for Viori was one of the most rewarding we have worked on this year. They asked us to explore 3D visualisation to supplement their current photography in order to achieve more consistent and timely results.

Modelling and texturing were done from photo reference, with a particular effort to capture the warmth and detail of the exquisite finishes on the soaps and packaging.

The soap bars were modelled using a combination of subdivision surfaces with displacement for the patterns. We constructed the patterns in Illustrator and then pushed these into Photoshop to create the displacement maps. The height maps were combined in Modo with a damage map to break up the surface, and a number of albedo, roughness and normal maps to create a complex, natural-looking surface.

We then modelled the packaging, which was initially a French tuck carton but was later changed to an accordion fold pack. To achieve a more realistic result, we always model the packaging flat and fold up virtually. The foil and paper fibre detail of the packaging was faithfully reproduced but, at the same time, curated for a cleaner appearance.

Rendering was done with Octane for Modo.

The Citrus Yao variation was modelled completely with subdivision surfaces instead of using displacements for the pattern. It always pays to remain flexible with techniques to find the best path forward.

Each scent variation was required to be shown with a selection of key ingredients. Most of these were researched, purchased from various asset libraries, and then customised to improve quality or achieve a specific colour or style.
